Né en 1926 au Danemark, Verner Panton étudie à l’Odense Technical College avant de poursuivre ses études à l’Architecture Department de la Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. De 1950 à 1952, il travaille pour l’entreprise d’Arne Jacobsen, puis crée son propre studio d’architecture et de design expérimental en 1955.

Panton est passioné par le plastique et les nouveaux matériaux, qu’il utilise pour créer des formes colorées, vibrantes et géométriques, qui rappellent le mouvement Pop Art. En 1959, il fait ses débuts avec la Cone Chair, qui lui vaudra de nombreuses collaborations et partenariats avec de grands fabricants. En 1960, il conçoit la première collection de mobilier gonflable et commence à créer des ’”environnements globaux” futuristes, dans lesquels les murs, le sol, le plafond et les meubles forment une seule et unique esthétique.
Au début des années 1960, Panton déménage à Bâle et commence une longue collaboration avec Vitra, qui donnera lieu notamment à l’emblématique Panton Chair, première chaise en porte-à-faux faite d’un seul morceau de plastique.
