Terracotta vase with female figure in bas-relief, signed Marcello FANTONI. ORIGIN Italy PERIOD 1950s AUTHOR Marcello FANTONI Marcello Fantoni, sculptor, medalist and ceramist, was born in Florence in 1915 and studied in his city at the Porta Romana Art Institute, student of, among others, Libero Andreotti, Bruno Innocenti, Gianni Vagnetti and Carlo Guerrini. After his years of training, starting from 1934, he worked in various ceramic laboratories and factories including the 'Cantagalli' in Florence, took on the role of artistic director of a small ceramic factory in Perugia and in 1936 opened his own workshop called 'Fantoni Ceramiche', in via Luigi Lanzi 2 in Florence, where it produces both serial furnishing ceramics and sculpture and artistic ceramics. In 1937 he presented some ceramics from his production at the VII National Crafts Exhibition in Florence, attracting public attention for his rustic-style works decorated with African and marine landscapes animated by stylized figures painted in enamel. Subsequently he opened a collaboration with the 'C.I.M.A.' and between the end of the 1930s and the early 1940s he created models for the Perugian factory 'La Salamandra'. The war years saw him as a partisan in the mountains and in the early post-war years he found employment at the 'Maioliche Deruta' factory. In the 1950s he restarted his own business in the premises at number 45 in via Lanzi, in Florence where he began to dedicate himself to the creation of large sculptures. A great experimenter of matter, he is an interpreter of different artistic currents from Twentieth Centuryism to Primitivism, from Cubism to Abstractionism up to the Informal and Minimalism of his latest works. Starting in 1970, in his studio, he founded the International School of Ceramic Art and dedicated himself to teaching and experimenting with high-temperature firing. In 2000, Florence dedicated a large anthological exhibition to him entitled 'Ceramics as Art, Marcello Fantoni ceramist and sculptor' set up at the Salone delle Regie Poste and in 2005 the Archaeological Museum of Fiesole dedicated an important solo exhibition to him entitled 'Marcello Fantoni, a beautiful shape with a beautiful color'. ORIGINE Italie PÉRIODE 1950 AUTEUR Marcello FANTONI Marcello Fantoni, sculpteur, médailleur et céramiste, est né à Florence en 1915 et a étudié dans sa ville à l'Institut d'art Porta Romana, où il a été l'élève, entre autres, de Libero Andreotti, Bruno Innocenti, Gianni Vagnetti et Carlo Guerrini. Après ses années de formation, à partir de 1934, il travaille dans divers laboratoires et usines de céramique, dont le "Cantagalli" de Florence, assume le rôle de directeur artistique d'une petite usine de céramique à Pérouse et, en 1936, ouvre son propre atelier appelé "Fantoni Ceramiche", via Luigi Lanzi 2 à Florence, où il produit aussi bien des céramiques d'ameublement en série que des sculptures et des céramiques artistiques. En 1937, il présente quelques céramiques de sa production à la VIIe exposition nationale de l'artisanat de Florence, attirant l'attention du public pour ses œuvres de style rustique décorées de paysages africains et marins animés par des personnages stylisés peints en émail. Par la suite, il entame une collaboration avec la C.I.M.A. et, entre la fin des années 1930 et le début des années 1940, il crée des modèles pour l'usine pérugienne "La Salamandra". Pendant la guerre, il est partisan dans les montagnes et, au début de l'après-guerre, il travaille à l'usine "Maioliche Deruta". Dans les années 1950, il reprend sa propre entreprise dans les locaux du numéro 45 de la via Lanzi, à Florence, où il commence à se consacrer à la création de grandes sculptures. Grand expérimentateur de la matière, il est l'interprète de différents courants artistiques, du vingtième siècle au primitivisme, du cubisme à l'abstractionnisme, jusqu'à l'informel et au minimalisme de ses dernières œuvres. À partir de 1970, il fonde dans son atelier l'École internationale d'art céramique et se consacre à l'enseignement et à l'expérimentation de la cuisson à haute température. En 2000, Florence lui consacre une grande exposition anthologique intitulée "La céramique comme art, Marcello Fantoni céramiste et sculpteur", installée au Salone delle Regie Poste. En 2005, le musée archéologique de Fiesole lui consacre une importante exposition personnelle intitulée "Marcello Fantoni, une belle forme avec une belle couleur".
